The Accidental Grail: My Birth-Year Submariner

“You do not find the Grail, the Grail finds you”, said Sir Leigh Teabing in the Da Vinci Code. Cheese aside, those words aptly describe my horological journey to-date.

Since going down this rabbit hole six years ago, I have been trying to define and attain that One Watch To Rule Them All. I even wrote my own 10 commandments on the subject, although with each acquisition I seem to be breaking more of them.

Dating A Grail: A. Lange & Söhne Datograph

My whirlwind affair with the drop-dead desirable Datograph may be summed up as follows: Boy meets grail, pursues grail, attains grail, then parts ways with grail.

But like The Godfather, this affair deserves to be chronicled in all its glory. You fully appreciate Coppola’s genius by viewing the original 3-hour version, not some “The Godfather in 5 minutes” clip spliced together by an enterprising YouTuber. So let’s go back to the start…

Rare Delicacy: A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Special

I got bitten by the Lange bug in late 2015. Like the bite of a seemingly innocuous insect, I was only mildly interested in the manufacture initially. Then I started reading more – I read about how F. Mambo Jumbo: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15202

The Audemars Piguet (AP) Royal Oak was my first grail watch, and the very timepiece that sparked my interest in horology. I first saw one in the flesh in 2013 on the wrist of a friend. It was not the 15202 but one of the models with a smaller diameter – perhaps the 36mm 14790. I was mesmerised by the constant shimmering of the bracelet, as the brushed and polished steel links worked their magic. Continue reading “Mambo Jumbo: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15202”

Bleu Label: FP Journe Chronometre Bleu

I met Max Busser (yes, the MB of MB&F) at an event in April 2015. A truly warm and unassuming person, he was quite happy to chat with me about Francois-Paul Journe.

“It had to be FP Journe”, said Max, when I remarked that I liked how he kick-started the Harry Winston Opus collection by collaborating with Journe. “I knew that if I didn’t get him back then, I’d never be able to get him.” Continue reading “Bleu Label: FP Journe Chronometre Bleu”
